I stripped this pattern down to just 2 stitch types for a true first-timer, no cuff shaping, no ribbing, nothing beyond sc and inc. It is a genuine stash-buster at well under a full skein of yarn. These are sized for newborn only, and are not intended for a baby who is standing or walking.

Materials
- 1 skein worsted weight (#4) yarn, about 30 yards used per pair
- 3.5mm (E-4) hook
- Yarn needle
- Size: newborn only
Abbreviations used
This pattern uses only ch (chain), sc (single crochet), inc (2 sc in one stitch), and dec (sc2tog). No hdc, no back-loop-only work, nothing beyond the 4 basics above.

Pattern instructions
Sole
Chain 9. Round 1: 2 sc in second chain from hook, sc in next 6 chains, 3 sc in last chain, sc in next 6 chains along the other side, 2 sc in last stitch, join (20 sc). This shorter starting chain than the multi-size booties pattern keeps this version single-purpose and simple.
Sides and upper
Round 2: sc in each stitch around (20). Round 3 to 4: sc in each stitch around, decreasing 2 stitches evenly on round 4 to shape the upper. There is no separate cuff shaping step, since this version fastens off right after the upper shaping.
Finish
Fasten off and weave in ends. Skipping a distinct cuff section is what keeps this version genuinely easier than the comprehensive multi-size pattern, at the cost of a slightly plainer finished look. I still think this plainer version is the right starting point for a first-ever pair.
Frequently asked questions
What size are newborn crochet booties?
This pattern targets a 2.5 inch sole length, sized for newborn only. Want more sizes? See our full booties guide instead.
How much yarn do I need for baby booties?
This pattern uses about 30 yards per pair, the smallest amount of any bootie pattern on this site, since it skips the cuff section entirely.
Do I need to check gauge for booties?
Even on a simplified pattern like this one, I recommend a quick check. Booties forgive more than a garment does, but a swatch still prevents your first pair from coming out too small.
